Experience Details
The Tohoku region is full of wonderful local foods, making the area an absolute foodie paradise delight! The Sanriku Coastline is well-known for its delicious oysters or kaki, juicy and intense in flavor, while in particular oysters from the Matsushima region are known for being especially tasty. Matsushima Bay is home to the famous natural site in Japan that is known as one of the country’s three most beautiful views, where over 200 islets with picturesque pine trees fill the bright blue ocean. Needless to say, this awesome event full of Matsushima oysters is perfect for any oyster addict and nature lover. You’ll meet your guide at Sendai Station and take the train to Nobiru Station, and from there take a taxi to the starting point of the hike up to the observation point up at Otakamori. Enjoy the scenery from one of the 4 best great views of Matsushima (approximately a 60 minute walk to the observation point), and then return to the main town area. Meeting a local fisherman, you’ll jump on a local fishing boat and head towards the oyster rafts and experience oyster harvesting, and tasting up to 3 oysters as you go, they couldn’t be fresher! You’ll also enjoy a boat cruise around Matsushima Bay, and discover hidden bays and rock formations only known by locals. After getting to know the local oysters, it’s time for an all-in oyster feast. That’s right, you’ll be having an all-you-can-eat Matsushima oyster lunch at a local oyster shack. Are you ready for the challenge? Following lunch, you’ll explore the town of Matsushima with a guided walking tour, stopping by a local store that specializes in local oyster senbei rice crackers. Delicious and made in front of your eyes, it’s the perfect finishing oyster snack! On the way to enjoy some shopping along Kaigan-dori shopping street, you’ll pay a visit to the oldest historic building in the city, Godaido Temple. Shop and leisurely buy some souvenirs if you can manage it after your oyster feast extravaganza!
